Alfred C. Sames, 82, Scranton, died Sunday morning at home after being stricken. He is survived by his wife, the former Carmella Giarratano.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Alfred A. and Helen Taylor Sames, he was a graduate of South Scranton Catholic High School Class of 1959 and a committee member of the 1959 Club, a group of graduates that would meet up socially every year and help plan reunions for their classmates. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a detective with the Scranton Police Department and then later as a court security officer with the Federal Marshall’s Office. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Victor Alfieri Club, the Waldorf, and the Elmhurst Country Club. He was also a member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish in South Scranton.
Al loved his trips with his beloved Carm and their friends. He always spoke lovingly of his son, Al. He loved his brothers in blue, fishing, hunting, competitive team shooting, and a good meal. He enjoyed his regular lunches with his “old friends.” He was the kind of guy you wanted on your side when things got tough.
A loving and devoted husband, father, and friend, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their son, Allan, Scranton; nieces Frances Giarratano, Pittston; Susan Groom and husband William, Pittston; and Charlene Giarratano and companion Corey Psolka, Pittston; a nephew Ross Giarratano and wife Staci, Hughestown; as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Ross and Frances Manganaro Giarratano; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Suzanne Giarratano.
The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish at Nativity Church, 633 Orchard St., Scranton.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of mass.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that contributions in Al’s memory be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
