Anetta DeAngelo, 88, of Waverly, passed away peacefully on Monday evening at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA, surrounded by the love of her family. A passionate educator and lifelong advocate for the growth and development of young minds, Anetta dedicated over 30 years to shaping the lives of children as the owner and teacher of the Montessori Children’s House in Waverly. Honored as the Scranton Times Northeast Woman of the Week in 1984, she firmly believed in the power of curiosity, independence, and hands-on learning, guiding each child with patience, wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to their potential. Her classroom was a place of warmth, encouragement, and discovery, where she instilled a love of learning that extended far beyond the school walls. Her influence reached generations of students, many of whom carried the lessons she imparted into their own lives and families.
As a woman of deep faith, Anetta had a passion for serving others and following Jesus, a calling she lived out with unwavering devotion. She found immense joy in giving from her heart, whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or a quiet act of generosity. Her faith was not just something she practiced—it was the foundation of her life, guiding her every interaction and decision. She believed in the power of love, compassion, and selflessness, always putting the needs of others before her own. Whether comforting a friend, mentoring a student, or sharing wisdom with her family, she embodied Christ’s teachings in the purest form.
Anetta’s legacy lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her daughter, Clel Tomlinson and husband Eli of Clarks Summit; her sons, David DeAngelo and wife Kim of Mullica Hill, NJ; Paul DeAngelo and wife Anna of Tannersville, PA; Leo DeAngelo and wife Jennie of Conroe, TX; and Nicholas DeAngelo and wife Raquel of Augusta, GA. She was a cherished grandmother to nine grandchildren—Brandon DeAngelo, Stephanie Kramer, Sarah DeAngelo, Paul Nicholas DeAngelo, Nicole Heffelfinger, Alexandria DeAngelo, Nicholas DeAngelo II, Marcus DeAngelo, and Cecelia DeAngelo—as well as five step-grandchildren, Alex Tomlinson, Sean Tomlinson, Andrew Wolfram, Joshua Wolfram, and Lexi Heffelfinger. Her love extended to six great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in honor of Anetta’s life and devout faith on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Rd., Clarks Green. The service will lead family, friends, and loved ones in prayer as they gather to celebrate her legacy of love, service, and devotion to Christ.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects prior to the Mass at the church, beginning at 9 a.m. This time of gathering will provide an opportunity to offer condolences, share cherished memories, and celebrate the profound impact Anetta had on so many throughout her life.
Following the Mass, Anetta will be laid to rest at Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton, where she will be reunited in eternal peace with those who have gone before her. Her family finds solace in knowing that her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to faith and education.
