Anita Estella “Nettie” Pinkus, 104, Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon at home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Myron A. Pinkus, Esq. (Ret. Lt.Colonel) in 1999.
Born in Pittston, daughter of the late Emanuel and Mary Anna (Miriam) Weiss Lebowitz, she was a member of Hadassah and Temple Israel of Scranton, a place that she cherished. She was in fact older than the temple itself and happily shared that when the temple celebrated its 100th anniversary. She enjoyed reading and travel, and at one point owned a dress shop in Wilkes-Barre, but her true interest was in her many philanthropic endeavors. She was extremely generous, and individually and as a trustee of the Myron A. and Anita E. Pinkus Charitable Foundation donated to countless religious, civic, and educational organizations, to numerous charities that benefitted the blind, as well as those that cared for the welfare of animals. She also established scholarships at Pennsylvania State University and Dickinson School of Law where her husband had attended.
Above all, it was her family that she adored. She loved to spend time with those closest to her, hosting shabbos dinners and get-togethers throughout the year. She had an open door to all, and an exceptional memory, being the one that everyone would turn to when there were questions about familial stories.
Gratitude is extended to Allied Hospice, Visiting Angels, and especially her caregivers Marge, Shirley, Pose, and Maria for their compassion to their Aunt Nettie during her times of need.
Surviving are her many treasured nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and their families, and a wide host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Selma Rosenberg, Armand Lebowitz, and Gary Lebowitz.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery.
Her family will receive guests at the family residence on Friday evening from 7-9 p.m.
