Anthony “Zar” J. Rinaldi, 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday with his family by his side at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. He is survived by his wife, the former Thelma Wheeler. The couple had been married for 27 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late William and Antoinette Ricco Rinaldi, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School, class of 1965. He was an officer for the Dunmore Police Department, retiring as the assistant chief after 25 years of service. Because he couldn’t sit still in retirement, he enjoyed his job as a courier for FNCB for 12 years, which allowed him to keep active and social. He was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish.
Zar had a personality like no other. Everyone who met him loved him and he returned that love fiercely. He would do absolutely anything for anyone. He enjoyed spending time with his family, Saturday get-togethers with his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, making people laugh, good food, and watching sports and old cowboy movies. His grandsons, Ryan and Drew, brought such joy to his life.
In addition to the love of his life, Thelma, he is survived by a daughter, Danielle Preston and husband, James, of Furlong; a son, William, Dunmore; grandsons, Ryan and Drew Preston; a brother, Paul, Dunmore; many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and close friends.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. All those attending Mass are kindly and respectfully asked to socially distance and are required to wear a mask.
There are no public calling hours. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
