Arlene R. Shahum Obituary

Arlene R. Shahum, 65, of Mechanicsburg and formerly of Scranton, died Saturday at Penn State Hershey Medical Center with loved ones by her side.

Originally from West Scranton, Arlene is the daughter of the late Paul Joseph and Nellie Artabane Shahum. She was a 1976 graduate of West Scranton High School and a 1980 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Special Education. She taught for the Scranton School District for 27 years.

Surviving her is her daughter, Maura Marsico Frey and husband Chris; sisters Lilly Clifford (Joe), Marianne Gallagher (Frank), and Rose Ludgate (Paul); nieces, nephews, too many cousins to count, and friends. Arlene held a special place in her heart for Tony (Denise), Craig, and Mark (Aimee) Marsico. Also surviving is her precious grandson, Everett, who gave her the will to keep fighting every day. He was her inspiration, partner in crime and she was his biggest fan and supporter.

She is preceded in death by many loved ones and friends, including her nephew, Christopher Clifford.

Arlene was a selfless person who gave everything she had, up until her final days. Facing various health issues, she overcame all challenges and obstacles with her fighting spirit and will to be here for her grandson. Known more commonly as Nana these days, she was an avid 10U Jr. Colts baseball and Saint Theresa's Basketball fan, where she cheered on Everett and his teammates. Her silly noises and cheers will be missed by fans and players. Even though Everett is her reason, her biggest accomplishment is her daughter Maura. By her side for every procedure, Maura was the driving force in ensuring she received the best health care she could get. Maura wouldn’t have been able to do all she did if she didn’t have an amazing husband by her side. He gave her the space to care for Arlene without hesitation or guilt.

The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice of Central PA, the Heart Transplant, IBD, ID and Kidney Teams at Penn State Health, as well as Shelly and Cheryl who were her biggest advocates in her final days, ensuring her wishes were followed.
