It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Barbara (Topa) Magnotta, 82, of Scranton on Thursday evening October 31, 2024 at Geisinger-CMC in Scranton. Her passing comes as she lost her battle with multiple illnesses. She was preceded by her loving husband Anthony Magnotta in 2016.
Barbara was born in Scranton on March 14, 1942 to Bartley and Sophie Rushak Topa. She attended West Scranton High School after which she wed Anthony at age 20 and celebrated 54 years of marriage. She was a devout Catholic and a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Scranton. Barbara was a career seamstress in the local garment industry, and carried her skill at home after her retirement. Besides spending time with family, she loved to devote time to her fur baby Patches and avidly enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino.
Barbara was a beloved mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
Together she and Anthony had three children: William Magnotta and wife Kathy of Mountain Top, Cheryl Gerrity and husband Mark of Waverly, and Paul Magnotta who died this past March; six grandchildren, Justin (John), Carissa (Randy), Katlyn (Chris), Jordan, Celia, Andrew; 2 great-grandchildren, Cayden & Levi, whom she loved dearly; as well as nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband, and son, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Krukowski, Tina Topa, Beatrice Zackavitch, Eugenia Boris, Robert Topa, and Bart Topa.
The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Ave., Scranton.
Family and friends may pay their respects that morning at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of mass.
