Canio A. “Yogi” Cantarella, Sr., 81, of Dunmore, died Friday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a brief illness surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Nole.
Born in Dunmore, son of the late Anthony and Antoinette Paolantonio Cantarella, he was a 1960 graduate of Dunmore High School. After graduation, Canio went on to serve in the United States Navy. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the National Book Company in Dunmore. A devout Catholic, he was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish. “Yogi” loved his family. He coached his sons' sports teams and he could always be found supporting his grandchildren in all their activities. He was an avid Penn State, Yankee and New York Giants fan. Most of all, he was a proud supporter of the Dunmore Bucks and the Lady Bucks.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at the Dunmore DaVita Dialysis Center for their excellent care.
Also surviving are sons, Canio A. Cantarella, Jr., and wife Julia, Anthony Cantarella and wife Laura, all of Dunmore, David Cantarella and wife Wendy, Marshfield, WI; a sister Lucy Verrastro and husband Ralph, Dunmore; grandchildren, Joshua Cantarella and wife Sarah, Sarah Cantarella, Antoinette Cantarella, Angelita Cantarella, Atiya Cantarella, Adrienne Cantarella and Damien Cantarella; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son Michael in 1973, and his sister Joanne Ingargiola and her husband Tony Ingargiola.
