On Saturday morning, October 12, Carol Ann Fedor Plotkin, of Scranton, passed away peacefully at age 79. Born on December 16, 1944, in Scranton, she was the third child and second daughter of Steven and Jule Kashuba Fedor. Carol will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, singer, bandmate, and homemaker who could fix almost anything mechanical.
As a teenager, Carol sang in the doo-wop band The Gales along with her lifelong best friend, Paulette Costa. Under the Debra Records label, The Gales recorded several singles written by an eccentric but charming songwriter named Richard Plotkin. The rest, as they say, is history; Carol and Richard married. Many years later, they divorced, but became even closer friends afterwards. Until the end, Carol continued to refer to him as her “husband.”
An athletic young adult, Carol enjoyed volleyball, skiing in the Poconos, and boating at Chapman Lake. She graduated from West Scranton High School in 1962. As an adult, she built a career working at several medical offices for area doctors and helped Richard with his shoe, toy, and hobby businesses. She was active in the PTA and the choir at Temple Israel. Later in life, she enjoyed going to dinner parties and playing mahjong with life-long friends. But perhaps Carol’s greatest joy was raising her beloved sons, Steve and Mike. Her need to care for those close to her was central to her character. She adored her three grandchildren.
Predeceased by Richard and her older sister Julie F. Green, Carol is survived by her brother, Steven Fedor and his wife Mary Ann; her older son, Steven, daughter-in-law Michelle Plotkin, and granddaughter Jillian; and her younger son, Michael, daughter-in-law Kendra Hansis, and their twins, Caleb and Oona. In addition, she leaves several nieces, nephews, extended family, and many good friends.
