Courtney A. Close, Sr., 88, Dunmore, died Sunday morning at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. He and his wife, the former Mary Dolinish, were married for 58 years.
Born in Scranton on Sept. 17, 1936 to the late Courtney Taft Close and Helen Thornton Close, he was also the great-grandson of the late Royal Taft, founder of Tafton, PA. An Eagle Scout and graduate of Dunmore High School Class of 1954, Courtney went on to obtain his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. He also served in the United States Navy and was a survivor of the Cuban Missile Crisis. For many years, he worked in quality control for RCA, but would later spend 19 years as a mechanical engineer for the Department of Defense, inspecting ships around the world, and was presented with numerous awards for his efforts.
Courtney enjoyed macrame, a beer at the VFW, and his granddaughter. He was a true family man who will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their son, Courtney Close, Jr., daughter Laureen Close, and granddaughter Sarah; his sister Mary Ellen and husband Richard Bacon; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his brother David.
The funeral will be Friday at 11a.m. in Dunmore Presbyterian Church, 137 Chestnut St., Dunmore.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Dunmore Presbyterian Church.
