Daniel Smith Obituary

Daniel Joseph Smith “Smitty”, 75, of South Abington Township, passed away peacefully on April 6 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. He is survived by his wife, the former Michele Talarico.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Margaret Mahon Smith Kelly. He was a graduate of South Catholic High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton. Prior to retirement, he built a successful career in sales and was employed by The Scranton Times, FedEx, and Voortman Cookies.
Danny was a faithful and devout Catholic. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church in Clarks Summit and made a point of never missing Sunday Mass.
Danny was a dedicated and loving husband to Michele for 37 years. He was a devoted father who never missed a basketball or baseball game and taught his sons that kindness and patience were a way of life. He had a passion for sports and music, particularly The Beatles, and cherished spending time with family. He often reminisced about his memorable trip to Woodstock with his best buddy Tony. He was an avid tennis and baseball player, as well as a runner. He was a huge Notre Dame, Yankees, and Steelers fan.
Danny enjoyed the simple joys of life, such as going for coffee and ice cream with his sister-in-law Sheryl, as well as long-distance family chats.
He faced his final days with great courage and grace, never complaining. Danny’s legacy will live on through his two sons, who embody the gentlemen he raised them to be. It was God’s perfect timing that allowed Danny to experience the happiness of his son’s marriage and the blessing of a new daughter-in-law.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Daniel Smith and his wife Ezgi, and Ryan Smith, all of Pittsburgh.
He is also survived by his sister, Kate Park of Colorado; his brother, Patrick Smith and wife Debbie of New York; sisters-in-law Sheryl Talarico of South Abington Township and Pamela Chairge and her husband Thomas of Scranton; and brothers-in-law Thomas J. Talarico of Factoryville and James A. Talarico of Scott Township. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, William Parke. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Glen Finney for his unwavering support and guidance throughout the past six years.
