Dominick L. “De” Verrastro, Jr., 85, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025 at Geisinger Community Medical Center due to a battle with health issues that he fought valiantly for many years.
Born in Dunmore, to Dominick L. Verrastro, Sr. and Vita Grace (Bocchicchio) Verrastro, he was the youngest of eight children. Dominick was preceded in death by his brothers Leonard, Canio “Cubby”, Patrick, Salvatore, and his sisters Kate Gavern and Marie Sileo.
Dominick is survived by his longtime devoted wife Dorothy “Dorry” (Magnot); his brother Donato “Coach” Verrastro of Dunmore; his son Dominick L. Verrastro III (“Butch”) and his wife Tina of Peckville; his daughter Carisa Stout and her husband Bob of Dunmore; his daughter Kristen Verrastro of Oakland, CA; and his four grandchildren Brandan, Bobby, Tabitha, and Dominic.
Dominick graduated from Dunmore High School and the University of Scranton. He was an Army reservist for six years. Before his retirement, Dominick was a district administrator in the Dunmore School District and a teacher at Dunmore High School. He was also a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore. Dominick’s parents owned a bar called Leonard’s (now Chaplin’s Honky Tonk) where he and his siblings worked for many years until his mother’s passing.
De and Dorry married in 1977, celebrating their 47th wedding anniversary in November 2024. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed spending time together shopping, going out to dinner, and seeing live entertainment. De particularly loved trips to Las Vegas to see shows, and he delighted in going to visit Kristen in California as she took them on tours up and down the coast. In De’s later years, he and Dorry often enjoyed quiet evenings at home watching movies together and reminiscing. De always treasured Kristen’s trips home so the family could all get together, especially when he and Dorry hosted many large family holiday meals at their home.
De was a reserved man up front, but was known as an excellent conversationalist with a sharp, quick-witted, robust sense of humor that could make anyone laugh. He loved to discuss football, and was a dedicated fan of Penn State. De closely followed politics and was a Judge of Elections for many years. He enjoyed golfing and was a long-time member of Elmhurst Country Club. De was a distinguished man who had an eye for fashion. He was fortunate to have many lifelong friends and enjoyed their company. De will be missed by all, especially his loving family.
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the PCU Unit at Geisinger Medical Center for the compassionate care they provided, and to Butch, for his dedicated daily presence during this difficult time.
A Mass of Christian Burial honoring De’s life will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment with military honors will follow in Dunmore Cemetery.
The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday, January 7, 2025 from 5-7p.m. at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker Street, Dunmore.
