Douglas J. Simone, 73, Scranton, died Friday at Geisinger-Community Medical Center, Scranton. He and his wife, the former Maria Santarsiero, were married on September 8, 1973.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Canio Joseph and Diana Barbetta Simone, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, and later Johnson School. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot. Doug was wounded while serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the 4-9 Infantry, 25th Division Manchus. He was a lifetime member of the 9th Infantry Regiment, the Manchu Association. He was also a lifetime member and District Commander of the DAV, a lifetime member of VFW Post 25, a member of the American Legion, and a proud member of the NRA. He was an avid outdoorsman and an amateur beekeeper.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the ICU and PCU staff of Geisinger-CMC. They went above and beyond with their care.
Also surviving are daughters, Danielle Hanway and husband Steve, Denver, NC; Reneé Simone-Samuel and husband A.J., Scranton; and Paula Myers and husband Wayne, Boyertown; grandchildren Vincent Canio and Annabella Samuel; Leiya Maeve, Bella Lucy, Dominic Angelo, and Tyler James; as well as a sister, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral will be Thursday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton St., West Scranton.
Friends may pay their respects at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. All those attending are asked to follow current safety guidelines with respect to social distancing and wearing a mask.
Those unable to attend the mass are invited to livestream the funeral via the funeral home Facebook page.
Interment to follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
