Dr. Thomas Aziz Artabane

Dr. Thomas Aziz Artabane, 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 12th. Born on October 7, 1941, he was the youngest child of the late Aziz Artabane and Anna Dahdah, and the oldest child of the late Norman Artabane and Lois McCabe.

A very proud West Sider, born on Ninth Street, Tommy graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1959 and the University of Scranton in 1963. “Moose” was an athlete-scholar at both schools, winning the Reverend James J. Mulholland Memorial Trophy at St. Pat’s and playing for the Royals’ football team, which remains undefeated since 1960.

Dr. Artabane attended medical school at the University of Ottawa, where he met his late wife, Lorraine Mazerolle Artabane. They married the day after their graduation on May 27, 1968. Following an internship at Harrisburg Hospital, Tom entered active duty for the United States Army. He rose to the rank of Captain and served as a flight surgeon for the 187th Assault Helicopter Company in the Vietnam War.

After leaving the service, Dr. Artabane completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. He then returned to Scranton, where he opened his private practice. Tom was a beloved physician, respected colleague, and passionate educator, working with the Scranton-Temple Residency Program from its onset. He was known for his calm demeanor and devotion to his patients.

Despite his many accomplishments, Tommy's greatest pride was his family. He was a constant source of encouragement and unconditional love, a trusted confidant, a lifelong friend, and a steady presence in the lives of those he loved. Known for his quiet wisdom, gentle counsel, and unwavering dependability, he was someone you could always count on. Above all, he was the family's patriarch—a steady and reassuring force whose guidance, compassion, and support shaped the lives of generations fortunate enough to know and love him.

 He is survived by his daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Brett Cooper; grandchildren Jackson, Holden, and Cecile (Scout); brothers, Norman and Aziz (Colleen Ruane); sisters, Nancy and Carole (Jay Rosenstein); as well as many nieces and nephews whom he adored.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph and Paul; sisters, Lucy, Helen, Nellie, and Rita; as well as his beloved nephews, Anthony Fata and Jonathan Rosenstein.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 17, with Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Maronite Church, 1320 Price St., Scranton. Those attending the funeral Mass are asked to proceed directly to the church. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday, June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Savino Traditional Funerals & Cremation Care, 157 S. Main Ave, West Scranton.
