Edward C. Sandy, 89, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. He and his wife, Mary Grant Sandy, would have celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage in September. Mary was the love of his life. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he was a man who fully embraced life, leaving behind memories filled with laughter and warmth.
Born on April 3, 1936, in Scranton to the late Angelo Sandy and Grace Gabriel Sandy, Edward lived a life enriched by the great outdoors, finding joy in hunting and fishing. He and his beloved wife Mary always enjoyed dancing together at numerous dance halls both near and far. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and The Chapel of the Four Chaplains, devoting his life to God and his strong Catholic faith. He proudly served his country in both the United States Army and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. His legacy, however, is most strongly defined by his unwavering positivity, sense of humor, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome in his presence. Known affectionately as a "jokester," Edward’s hearty laughter and bear hugs were familiar and cherished among those who knew him.
Edward is survived by his devoted wife, Mary. He also leaves behind his brother, Anthony of Factoryville; his children, Mary Grace Holmes of Worcester, Massachusetts, Mark and his wife Janice of Roaring Brook Township, and Angelo and his wife Rosa of New Jersey; seven grandchildren—Alex, Dylan, Ellette, William, David, Shawna, and Ryan; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Thomas and his wife Roberta and his son-in-law, William Holmes.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 9, at St. Lucy's Church, 949 Scranton St., Scranton, from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Fairview Memorial Park, 111 State Route 435, Elmhurst Township.
Edward’s life was one of joy, service, and deep love for his family and community. He will be profoundly missed, but his laughter and kindness will echo in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
