Frances S. Horwitz, Philadelphia, and formerly of Scranton, died early Wednesday at home. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Harry Horwitz, in 1977.
Born in New York City, daughter of the late Gutman (Goodman) and Esther Nadel Schifter, she was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, and a former member of Temple Israel of Scranton. In her younger years, she was employed as a professional singer in the late 1930s to early 1940’s. Prior to her retirement, she was the original owner of the Scranton Wig Center for years, and later went into a career in the insurance field.
She was the beloved mother to sons Bruce Horwitz of Huntingdon Valley, PA; Mark Horwitz of Nashville, TN; and Marla Horwitz-Daly of Philadelphia; and beloved grandmother to Samuel H. Daly.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Zelda, Mausch, and Nunnie.
A graveside service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in Temple Israel Cemetery by Rabbi Miriam Spitzer.
Shiva will be observed in Philadelphia at Frances‘ home on Saturday from 7 to 9 PM and Sunday and Monday from 6 to 9 PM. Family and friends can contact family for address.
