George H Caswell, 86, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Allied Services Hospice Center in Scranton. His last days were spent with his wife of 64 years, Ann (Rosar) Caswell, of Dunmore and his four children, Karen Caswell of Morristown, NJ, George Caswell of Kennett Square, PA, Susan Gershey of South Abington Township and Patti Posten of East Stroudsburg.
Born in Dickson City, George was the son of Thomas Sidney and Anna Nemeth Caswell. He was a graduate of the Johnson School of Technology and served his country honorably as an MP in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky followed by several years in the US Army Reserves. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Eclipse Hose Company. He joined RCA upon its open and became an active delegate of the IUEW Local 178. After decades of dedicated service as a top grade machinist, he retired from Thompson Electronics (RCA) and dove fully into his passion – old cars.
George was the ultimate Street Rodder. Whether in the garage rebuilding 1948 Fords or Cadillacs, hanging with his brother, Thomas, at TJ’s Garage or heading to York for the open of NSRA Nationals, he enjoyed his retirement. He was an active member of the Pocono Mountain Street Rods, Villa Capri Cruisers, and the National Street Rod Association. He could be found touring the country in his custom built classics or spending Fridays with pals at their local cruise nights.
George led a full life. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother, son and friend. A devout Catholic, George had a warm heart and an enormous caring spirit. With tremendous know how and an uncanny ability to fix practically anything, he would lend a hand to anyone who needed his help or guidance. His wit was his charm.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Agnes Lubinski and brothers Ernie and Thomas (TJ) Caswell. He is survived by his wife and children, his daughter-in-law, Eileen (Casey) Caswell and sons-in-law Dr Joseph Gershey and Paul Douglas Posten; his grandchildren: Christopher Caswell of Chicago, IL, George and his wife Hayward Sawers Caswell of Baltimore, MD, Thomas Caswell and his fiancée Catherine Cicholski of Phoenixville, PA, siblings Lauren and Nicholas Gershey of South Abington Township, brothers Powell and Palmer Posten of East Stroudsburg, and his great grandson George Kemp Caswell of Baltimore; plus numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
There is no public viewing, but friends and extended family are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 10AM at Saint Mary’s of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street, in Dunmore. All those attending the Mass are required to wear a mask upon entering the church and are kindly asked to follow physical distancing guidelines. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst.
