Grace Kowalchick Obituary

Grace DiSavino Kowalchick, 98, of Scranton, died Wednesday at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Scranton.  She was the widow of John Kowalchick, who died in 2002.

Grace was born in Dunmore and was the daughter of the late Anthony and Ida Casarella DiSavino.  She was a long-time, devout member of St Lucy’s Church, Scranton and most recently a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish, Scranton. She was educated in the Dunmore public school system, worked in the garment industry and DePietro’s catering for many years. Upon her retirement, at age of 93, she worked at her nephew’s restaurant, Natale’s.

While living in West Scranton, Grace’s home was opened to anyone at any time. She was happiest when she was cooking and baking for Christmas. Special memories were formed when she supervised family and friends in preparing cookies, raviolis, and other Italian delicacies. Very often you would find Grace sitting on the front porch or patio reminiscing about old times with family, neighbors and friends.  She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Grace was truly a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her generous, positive spirit and her kind, loving heart will sadly be missed by everyone she touched.

Surviving are her daughters, Mary Ann Sadauskas, Dummore, and Tana Vacendak and husband, Michael, Clarks Summit; four grandchildren, Edward Sadauskas and wife, Laura, Olyphant, Maria Conrad and fiancé, Lester Dreisbach, Baltimore, MD, Matthew Vacendak and wife, Alyssa, Clarks Summit, and Brian Vacendak, South Abington Township; six great grandchildren, Isabella, Lily, Stella, Mollie, Ethan, Harley; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Molly Portanova, Pauline Gianzanti and Angeline Natale and her son-in-law, Edward Sadauskas.

The family would like to express their deepest thanks to the nurses and staff of Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their care throughout her stay. She was grateful for the many friends she made while residing there.

Due to the current pandemic, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately in Mary, Mother of God Parish, North Scranton. Interment will be in Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for all to attend.
