Helen Bereznak, 91, of Dunmore, died Tuesday afternoon at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton. She was married to Stephen Sofchak for 35 years until his death in 1987, and to Frank “Butch” Bereznak until his death in 1994.
Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late John and Mary Juba Fetsko, Helen was a graduate of Dunmore High School. She worked for Somark Glove Factory, Dunmore, until her retirement. Helen was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Dunmore, where she was a member of the former choir, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Greek Catholic Union, and a former member of the Byzantine Deanery Choir. She was an active member of the VFW 3474 Auxiliary, where she served as Chaplain for over 40 years, a position she held with pride and honor.
Helen loved to travel, enjoyed cooking and baking, and taking monthly bus trips to the casinos. She was a faithful member of the International Dinner Club at St. Mary’s Center, Scranton, and the 50 Plus Club. Helen believed in celebrating life, and when given the choice between dwelling on sadness and sorrow, or being happy, she always chose joy.
Surviving is her son, Stephen Sofchak, at home; two brothers: Joseph Fetsko and William Fetsko; two sisters: Margaret Bistran and Betty Salva; and a sister-in-law Annmarie Fetsko, all of Dunmore, and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her brother John Fetsko, and her sisters Anna Kerekonish Wright and infant Mary Fetsko.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 511 E. Drinker St., Dunmore. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held that morning from 9-10:15 a.m. in the funeral home. The family asks that masks be worn for the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Church, Dunmore, a parish she truly loved.
