Helen Pinkus Obituary

Helen Pinkus, daughter of Myer and Rachel Cohen, died on Thursday, January 26.  Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband Irving, and her four brothers, Morris, Isadore, Milton (Annette) and Benjamin (Julie) Cohen, her nieces Ellen Kaplan and Beth Kinne, and nephew Allan Pinkus.

Helen was a woman well known for her involvement in the Scranton community. Her greatest love was working as a volunteer with The Hadassah Organization. Helen was active both locally and nationally. She served as President of Northeastern PA Hadassah and for many years was on the National Board. She was appointed chair of Hadassah Camps for The National Youth Activities Department. She also sat on the Board of Bellevue Community Center for underprivileged children.

She was an avid golfer and could often be seen walking the path around Lake Scranton.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Nettie Pinkus, nephews and nieces Richard Cohen (Susan Fukushima), Jane Cohen Greene (Russell), Paula Savel (Kent), Murray Pinkus (Ellen-deceased), Susan Kinne (Norman), Arthur Pinkus (Carol), Carol Krempley (George), Samuel Pinkus (Leigh Ann Wince), Marsha Wrubel (Richard-deceased),16 great nieces and nephews, and 13 great-great nieces and nephews. 

Helen and Irv were long term members of Temple Israel.

Helen made a positive impact on the lives of many.  Her kind and generous spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Helen’s family would like to express our appreciation and thank yous for the compassion and loving care provided by the staff at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab, Compassionate Care Hospice, Rabbi Miriam Spitzer and Cantor Vladimir Aronzon from Temple Israel who have provided such loving care.

A graveside service will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery.
