Helen A. Siconolfi, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday at St. Mary’s Villa surrounded by loved ones. She was the wife of the late Joseph Paul Siconolfi who died in 2007. She entered into eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to guide and inspire all who loved her.
Born in Scranton on November 16, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Anna Smakula Kapelanovich, was a graduate of West Scranton High School, and was a long-time member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore. Prior to retirement, Helen worked for many years at the Villa St. Joseph for the Diocese of Scranton.
Steadfast in her beliefs, Helen approached life with clarity, conviction, and quiet determination. In an enduring act of love, she converted to the Roman Catholic faith to marry her beloved husband, Joe. At this time, she lovingly blended her Eastern European heritage with the Italian culture she married into. Together they shared 49 devoted years of marriage until his passing in 2007. Her faith remained a central pillar throughout her life, grounding her in moments of joy and challenge alike.
Helen’s commitment to her son, Rocco, and her daughter-in-law, Angie, was unwavering. She cherished her time visiting them in New York, delighted in every moment together, and was ready at a moment’s notice to assist in any way she could. She was also a proud and devoted grandmother, Helen found immense joy in her grandchildren, Abigail and Joseph. Her dedication was constant, selfless, and deeply rooted in love.
Organized and purposeful, Helen ran her household with the same care, discipline, and dignity she brought to her professional life, where she managed a retired home for priests. She believed in structure, responsibility, and doing things well—principles she lived by and modeled daily. Through faith, food, and family gatherings, Helen passed on a rich tapestry of culture, values, and love that will live on for generations.
Surviving are a son Rocco and his wife Angela and grandchildren Abigail and Joseph Siconolfi, all of Armonk, NY, a brother Nick Kapelan of Michigan, and her sister-in-law, Rose Baas, Dunmore. Helen was preceded in death by several siblings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10AM in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 303 Smith St., Dunmore. Interment will follow in the Dunmore Cemetery. Friends and family may call Monday from 3-6PM in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 E. Drinker Street in Dunmore.
