Helen Gilroy Yearing, 100, of Scranton, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at St. Mary's Villa in Elmhurst Township where she had been residing. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Edmund, who passed away in 2002 and her son Alan, who passed away in 2023.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late John P. Gilroy and Florence Dux Gilroy, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and then Lackawanna Business School. Helen devoted her life to raising her six children and supporting their activities and those of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a founding member of the Catholic Women's Club and a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of the Hibernians, the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Paul Church and the MAC Social Club.
Surviving are her children: David Yearing, Scranton, Carol Snyder and husband Walt, Archbald, Paul Yearing and wife Loretta, Dunmore, Michele Schoen and husband Terry, Southampton, and Edmund Yearing and wife Donna, Scranton. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Dorothy Marie Lenhart, Mary Elizabeth Riley and John P. Gilroy.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary's Villa Assisted Living and St. Mary's Nursing Home for their kindness and compassionate care over the last few years.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton, Interment to follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Family and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
