Herbert Hollenberg Obituary

Herbert S. Hollenberg died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 22, 2021, in his home in Pompton Plains, N.J., where he moved to be close to his children after the passing of his beloved wife, Lee, in 2018. Herb was known for his keen intelligence, abundant kindness, beautiful spirit, dedication to family, and deep respect for the dignity of others.

Born on June 23, 1925, in Scranton, Pa. to the late Ida and Harry Hollenberg, Herb loved life, acquiring new interests well into his 90’s.  He attended Penn State University, where he majored in mechanical engineering. He served as a Navy radar technician on an aircraft carrier during World War II and played saxophone in the Navy Band. He joined his family’s business, Scranton Plumbing Supply, at his father’s request, raising his family in Scranton. He was an active member of Temple Israel throughout his life, serving as president and in other leadership roles.  Herb enjoyed volunteering, including with Meals on Wheels and the Lackawanna Blind Association. He loved music, reading, opera, skiing, tennis and golf, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family - immediate and extended - and had a lifelong love affair with his wife, Lee.

Herb is survived by his children: Ted Hollenberg and wife, Dr. Rhoda Sperling; Judge Cathy Hollenberg Serrette and husband, Dennis Serrette; Sue Hollenberg and husband, Joel Stillerman; and Harry Hollenberg and wife, Ann Budner; his grandchildren: Kyle Serrette and wife, May Wheelwright; Desmond Serrette and wife, Vanessa Leon; Malcolm Serrette, Ty and Jesse Stillerman, Samantha and Ian Hollenberg, and Joshua and Lily Hollenberg; his four great-grandchildren: Lenox, Cyrus, Sol and Oso Serrette; and his sister-in-law Karen Scheck and brother-in-law Leonard Scheck. He was preceded in death by his brother Seymour Hollenberg and sister, Elma Starr.

Herb will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. One could not help but feel warmed by his presence.

A private graveside funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 25, 2021, for family only, in light of the pandemic. All those who wish to view the service are invited to the funeral home’s Facebook page to watch via livestream.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Temple Israel of Scranton or the donor’s favorite charity.
