Howard Allen Platt, M.D., Clarks Summit, passed away on February 22, 2024, at the age of 88.
Howard was the older son of the late Harry and Florence Platt. He graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia and then attended Lafayette College where he was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. He attended Jefferson Medical College and trained in Neurological Surgery at Episcopal Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic. Following medical training, he served as an officer in the Navy during the Vietnam War. After discharge from the Navy, he practiced in Haifa, Israel, where he met his wife, Vera Neumann, who was his lifelong partner for 52 years. He moved to Scranton, PA, to practice medicine and raise his family.
Howard was a devoted member of Temple Israel, Scranton, where he sang in the choir for over 40 years. He loved playing bridge, listening to music, watching Philadelphia sports teams, and most of all, spending time with his family: son Raphael Platt (Kathy), daughter Karen Platt (Joel Cahn), and son Michael Platt (Judy), as well as grandchildren Calvin Platt, Zachary Cahn, Jonah Cahn, Sara Cahn, Harrison Platt, Juliet Platt, and Amelie Platt. Also surviving is his brother, Franklin Platt.
Howard will always be remembered as a kind and gentle father and husband who gave all of his love to his family.
The funeral will be Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, followed by burial at the Temple Israel Cemetery in Dunmore.
Friends will be received during shiva at the family home Monday through Thursday from 1-7 p.m. with minyan Sunday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The family asks that anyone feeling unwell or experiencing any symptoms of illness to kindly refrain from attending.
