Irene Golden Obituary

Irene C. Golden, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully on Saturday at the Allied Services Hospice Center in Scranton, PA. As Irene would have put it, she was not “old” she was 96 years “mature”. Her husband of 70 years, Edward, survives her and lives at their home in Dunmore.

Irene was born on September 13, 1924 to the late Alexander and Stephanie Kowalski, in Scranton, PA. She attended Taylor High school.

Irene and Ed were married on October 14, 1950 and lived in Scranton briefly before moving to their current homestead in Dunmore.

In Irene’s earlier years she worked as a supervisor in data processing for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, then as a trainer for keypunch operators. Locally she worked in the business office of Northeastern National Bank in downtown Scranton. After retirement most people could visit with her while waiting for their cold cuts at the deli counter at the old Price Chopper in Dunmore. She was a great baker and her pineapple cobbler was always requested at church bake sales! But most of her years were spent working for the benefit and wellbeing of her family and others she met.

She was a devout Catholic and a member of Immaculate Conception church in Scranton. But mostly she was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and her gifts and talents were too many to list and she could do anything she set her mind to. She was friendly to everyone she met and lived life to its fullest. Everyone who met her was better for it.

Also surviving are her eight children: Eddie Golden and wife Margo of Carbondale, Linda Geary and husband Bill of S. Abington Twp, Jean Uffalussy and husband Rick of New Port Richey FL, Gail Moyer of Mount Pleasant SC, Alison Felski of Waverly, Mona Graci and husband Jeff of Scranton, John Golden and wife Amy of Laflin, and Paul ‘the baby’ Golden and wife Lori of Arnold MD. Also surviving are her sister Florence Kadlubowski, 16 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother Edward Kowalski, her sisters Stella Staszyn and Wanda Robbins, and her grandson SSGT Patrick Dolphin.

The family would like to thank her caregivers Louise, Lori and Claudette for their expressions of kindness and hard work to make her comfortable and happy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., Scranton. Interment to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Dunmore.

Family and friends may call Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church.
