James F. McNicholas, 94, Scranton, died Sunday evening in the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center. He was the husband of the late Angela Chatrone.
Born on July 11, 1929 to the late James and Mary (Lynch) McNicholas, he grew up in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. The oldest of eight children, Jim moved to Scranton in 1962 and started working at the Scranton State Hospital as an X-Ray technician shortly thereafter. He raised his family with his wife Angela in the Hill Section of Scranton where he lived for the remainder of his life. He was well known in the neighborhood for his famous whistle at sundown which signaled the time for his children to come home from wherever they were playing on the block. Jim loved to tell stories about growing up in East Falls and the cast of characters he and his brothers knew. His storytelling continued with his grandchildren and he always managed to incorporate each child into the story as a character themselves to their great delight. He enjoyed listening to the music of the Clancy Brothers, and loved watching the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He was thankful to be able to live long enough to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl. He was a voracious reader and collector of paperback mystery novels. He frequented the used book store and often came home with a big bag full of books he bought for a dollar.
His family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at both the Green Ridge Care Center and the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for the care and compassion shown to their father and grandfather.
In addition to his beloved wife Angela, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his four children James McNicholas, Linda McNicholas Lynch, Lori Wild (Tom), and Kevin McNicholas, his grandchildren James (Jamie), Conner, Liam (Miku), Bailey (Jake), Nicholas, Benjamin, Kieran, Casey (Matt) and Quinan, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
