James M. Dougher, Jr. Obituary

James M. Dougher Jr., 68, of Scranton, passed away in the early hours of March 6. A 1976 graduate of Scranton Central High School, James went on to complete his bachelor’s degree at The University of Scranton and further pursued his passion for history through advanced degree work. His research on World War II led to the awarding of a Purple Heart to a local veteran. His deep appreciation for history was rooted not only in academics but also in his time serving in the military. James proudly served as a Sergeant in the 109th Infantry of the Army, where his love for history grew and shaped his perspective on life.

James was more than just a historian; he was an avid hunter, musician, and athlete. He taught his son, Ty, how to hunt and how to play the drums, sharing many memorable experiences with him. He also enjoyed playing baseball for many years, holding his own alongside much younger players well into his forties. After his “retirement” from recreational baseball, he often enjoyed attending minor league baseball games with his loving wife of 18 years, Jessica, and his children, Lauren and Ty.

James was a proud member of the Scranton Canoe Club, where he spent countless hours on the course, building lasting friendships with fellow golf enthusiasts. Golf wasn’t just a sport for him; it was a bond he shared with his children, Ty and Lauren, who were the lights of his life. Lauren, his cherished golf partner, and Ty both grew to love the game as much as he did, and nothing brought him more joy than watching them embrace the sport. It was his favorite way to spend time with the entire family, with Jessica often by their side, driving the cart while they all played together, creating cherished memories. Ty and Lauren will continue to honor his memory through their love of golf, carrying forward his passion for golf and the lessons he shared.

James spent much of his professional life at Pocono Mountain School District, where he and Jessica worked alongside each other as teachers. Teaching brought James immense fulfillment, and their shared dedication to helping others grow made them a powerful team both in and out of the classroom.  Beyond his teaching, James was a coach for many activities at the school and left a lasting impact on many young people. In and outside of school, he was known for his deep care for others. Whether it was offering guidance to his students or being there for those he loved, James always put others first. His toughness and dedication were apparent in everything he did, yet his heart was always open to those in need.

Above all else, James was a devoted husband and father. His family was his pride and joy, and he was a constant source of strength, wisdom, and love for them. His enormous capacity for care, loyalty, and generosity will be remembered most.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jessica; children, Lauren and Ty; his brothers and sisters, Toni and husband Shawn, Randy, Michael and fiance Jennifer, Linda and husband Dan, Kathleen and husband Jim, and Colleen and husband Kevin; his Aunt Cookie and Uncle Al; his in-laws Carmen and Connie; his brother-in-law Carmen and wife Toni; and many nieces and nephews, who he was proud of and always cheered on in their successes. He is also survived by his dear friends, who meant a great deal to him and were an important part of his life. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores, and his sister, Patti.

James' legacy of love will live on in the many lives he touched. The family will be holding private calling hours, with details to be communicated accordingly. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in James’ honor to the Philadelphia Hope Lodge, which provided invaluable support to him and his family during his illness.  You can donate via this link or search “Hope Lodge Philadelphia” & select Donate in the top right corner.
