Janet Solimine Obituary

Janet Ann Solimine, 87, of Scranton, passed away Friday morning at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton.  Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Gladys Bray Brownell and a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School.  Prior to retirement, she was employed at the Price Chopper on Monroe Avenue in Dunmore and JCPenney Catalog Center.

Janet was a member of Myrtle Street United Methodist Church until it’s closure.  Janet was an active member in the church.  She was active in their Women’s Circle and made life-long friends that she traveled with often.  The “Birthday Girls” were her friends from the church that continued monthly birthday lunches until this past year when they were unable to continue.  Janet was a proud graduate of Scranton Technical High School.  She had life- long friends from her childhood to their time at “Tech” and they remained close even as many moved out of state.  Janet never missed a reunion and as they got older, they had yearly reunions and friends from all over returned to be with their childhood friends.  Janet was on the reunion committee and proudly displayed the plaque she received for her work on the reunion committee.  Janet loved to travel and was a sport lover but her favorite was baseball and the Yankees.  Janet traveled often to see them play with her friends and family.  Janet’s pride and joy were her grandchildren who called her ‘Nina”.  Janet “Nina” was a happy, kind, loving, gentle soul who will be missed by all you knew her.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Scranton Manor for all of the care and compassion shown to Janet.

She is survived by her children Nancy Melliand and husband Robert, Dickson City, Jeff Solimine and wife Sharon, Dunmore and Debbie Marichak and husband Joseph, Dunmore, grandchildren Jack Knott, Rebecca Melliand, Jeffrey Solimine, Jordyn and Jaclyn Marichak, nieces and nephews.

Janet was preceded in death by her sisters Nancy Brownell and Catherine Poltanis and brother- in- law Louis Poltanis.
