John G. Moffitt, 89, Dunmore died Thursday in Oak Ridge Rehab & Healthcare Center in Taylor. He and his wife the former Helen Mumfreda had celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on August 31st.
Born in the Hill Section of Scranton he was the son of the late John V. and Mae Coleman Moffitt, was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School Class of 1953 and the University of Scranton Class of 1959. He served honorably in the U.S. Army as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict.
John retired from the Scranton Times with his final position as Circulation Director, as well as Lackawanna County Comptrollers Office and Northeast Eye in Scranton. He was a member of SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish in Dunmore, the 25 Year Club at the Scranton Times, the PA Newspaper Publishers Association, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and the American Press Institute. John served as president of the Young Democrats of PA, the Dunmore Lions Club, the Scranton Chapter of Credit Union and ISCMA.
Also surviving are a daughter Mary Boyko and her husband Stephen, Scranton and a son Joseph Moffitt and his wife Jennifer, Dunmore, five grandchildren, Bridget and Anna Fox and Hailey, Sophia, and Joey Moffitt, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a son John D. Moffitt, two sisters, Mary Baker and Ann Moffitt, and a brother Sam Moffitt.
His family wishes to thank the staff at Oak Ridge Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center for their excellent care of John. They especially want to thank his nurse Maria Fronduti for taking wonderful care of him. She went above and beyond
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St. Dunmore with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St. Dunmore. Interment to take place in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow. Friends may call Monday at the funeral home from 5-8PM.
