John Kaminski, Sr. Obituary

John Walter Kaminski Sr., 93, of Dunmore, died Friday afternoon at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton, Pa. On July 4, 1949, John married the love of his life, the late Mary DeCarlo Kaminski, celebrating 65 years of marriage until her death in 2015. They had a loving marriage and two children, John Jr. and Maryann.
Born in Greenwood, John was the son of the late Walter and Catherine Kozloski Kaminski. He was educated in Greenwood schools until he enlisted in the United States Navy. While serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater, he was stationed on the USS Venago from August 1944 until June 1946, fighting bravely until his honorable discharge on June 9, 1946. During his time of service, John was awarded several honorable medals including the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal.
Throughout his life, John was a devoted Catholic and was a member of Saints Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore.
Once he rejoined the workforce, John worked in various positions at RCA Corporation in Dunmore for 21 years. Upon retirement, he loved traveling the world with his beloved wife, Mary.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, especially Gina, for all the care shown to John during his illness. A special thank you to his roommate Marty who stayed by his side until the very end.
Surviving are his son, John Kaminski Jr. and his wife, Maryann, South Abington Twp.; daughter, Maryann Sklanka and her husband, Eugene, Blakely; grandchildren, John Kaminski and his wife, Laura; Scott Kaminski, Eugene Sklanka; and Jennifer Pierson and her husband, Mark; great-granddaughters, Abigail and Elizabeth Kaminski, and Myla and Miranda Pierson; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Francine Godek and Ceil Ostrowski.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. All those attending the Mass are kindly and respectfully asked to social distance and are required to wear a mask.
Interment at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Dunmore. There are no public calling hours.
