John Joseph Purcell of West Pittston passed away at home on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
John was born May 27, 1945, in Scranton to James and Mary Kearney Purcell. He was a graduate of St. Paul's High School and the University of Scranton. John received an MBA degree from Fordham University and completed studies at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
John began a career in banking at Chemical Bank in New York City. He later worked at First Eastern Bank in Wilkes-Barre and then was regional vice president of commercial loans for the Northeastern Bank of Pennsylvania and subsequently for PNC Bank. He had also taught accounting part-time at Luzerne County Community College. Most recently, he was an insurance principal with Connor-Helring Associates, Scranton.
John was a parishioner of Saint John the Evangelist Church, Pittston. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Country Club of Scranton. He was a Boy Scout and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout, of which he was very proud.
John was a wonderful and devoted husband, father and friend who will be missed beyond measure.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ramage; his children, Victoria Purcell, Boston; Elizabeth Gibney, Bethesda, Md.; and Mary Winifred Fiedler and husband Scott, Chicago; his grandson, Carter Gibney; his sister, Joyce Revta and her husband, Richard; and his niece, Carolyn Allouche and her husband, Ryan.
A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church in Dunmore.
