John F. “Jack” Boland, 70, Scranton, died Monday afternoon in Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore.
Born in Scranton, son of the late John F. Sr. and Mary Kelly Boland, he was a graduate of Dunmore Central Catholic Class of 1971, and went on to obtain both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Scranton. Before retirement, he had worked within the State of New York at various social service organizations which included the Broome County Developmental Center as a developmental specialist. Jack had also been employed with Telespond of Lackawanna County and was the first executive director of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Center for Independent Living. Jack was also an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Surviving are children Tom Boland and wife Maureen, and Colleen Boland Harrington and husband Aaron, all of Philadelphia; grandchildren Molly and Catherine Boland, and Ryan and Alex Harrington; his brother James M. Boland and wife Ann of Dunmore; his former wife Ellen Clark Walsh of Waverly, sister-in-law Marilyn Boland of Scranton and brother-in-law Michael Gilroy of Binghamton, NY; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his brother Michael J. Boland in 2006, and his sister Marjorie Boland Gilroy in 1999.
Per Jack’s wishes, his remains have been donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry with the hope of helping others through advancements in medicine.

Friends will be received at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, on Thursday from 4-6 p.m.
