John G. “Jack” Higgins, 87, of Dunmore, passed away Tuesday morning at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton. He is survived by his wife, the former Annette Vabolis. The couple had been married for 62 years.
Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Leo J. and Florence Fitzpatrick Higgins. He was a graduate of Dunmore High School and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Dunmore and served in the Army Reserves. He received his bachelors of science degree in psychology and a masters in education from the University of Scranton. He taught at the former Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton and retired from the Dunmore School District after teaching for 27 years.
Jack was a proud and dedicated Notre Dame football fan and made numerous trips to Notre Dame for football weekends. He was also a Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan. He was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He always kept busy and enjoyed working around the house. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Also surviving are sons, Michael and companion Marie Dougherty, Center Valley, Pa, Steven and wife Peg Hart Higgins, Westerville, OH., and Jeff, Dunmore. Grandchildren, Leila Kaczmareck and husband Brendon, Easton, Pa, Matthew Higgins, Chicago, IL. Colin Higgins, Nashville, TN, Christopher and Jessica Higgins, Center Valley, Pa.
A sister, Florence Iezzi and husband William, a brother, Frank Higgins, a sister-in-law, Andrea Higgins, all of Dunmore. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Comerford and her husband Joseph. A sister, Rosemary Higgins, a brother, Leo Higgins and sister-in-law, Michelle Higgins.
The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St. Dunmore with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Chestnut St. in Dunmore.
Interment, Dunmore Cemetery.
Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2pm-5pm at the funeral home.
