Surrounded by his loving family, John Patrick “Sonny” Crotti, Dunmore, passed away Feb. 15, 2024, after a brief but hard-fought battle against brain cancer.
Born Sept. 21, 2007, in Scranton, he was the son of Erin Grogan and Joseph Crotti, both of Dunmore. Sonny was a sophomore at Dunmore High School and a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Church.
In addition to his parents and their partners, Sheila Sankar and Alex Haag, Sonny is survived by his sisters, Bella and Posie; grandparents Patrick and Paula Grogan, and Jack and Rose Crotti; aunt Shannon Talarico and her children, Joseph, Bianca, Salvatore, Francesca and Angelo; aunt Caitlin Lauredent and husband Leones, and their children, Leo and Laila; uncle Patrick Grogan; aunt Shelley Gower and her husband Eric, and their children, Lexie, Gianna and Jake; and uncle John Mike Crotti and wife Loriann, and their children, Jax and Lena.
He was preceded in death by his cousin, Sophia Gower.
Sonny was everyone’s golden boy thanks to his quick wit, humble personality and generosity with kindness. Ever the sportsman, he played flag and varsity football as well as basketball and golf. He was a leader among his teammates, never missing a practice or a game, even when his health kept him sidelined. Sonny was considerate and polite to all, including through his trials, never failing to thank even his clinicians during treatment. He bonded with his dad, who was his lifelong coach and his poker buddy, and was the ultimate charmer with his mom, who could never stay mad once he cracked a joke or flashed a smile. Sonny was Bella’s best friend and Posie’s protector. He was loyal to his friends (Poop Dollar 4L) and never held back his love for anyone, a rare quality in someone his age. He had a tender heart and kind nature that made him beloved by his cousins and all children, who were drawn to his warmth. Sonny was the kind of son, brother and friend we all wish for, and the kind of person we all want to be.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 303 Smith St., Dunmore. Interment to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Dunmore. All are welcome to attend. Arrangements are entrusted to Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. To offer an online condolence, visit www.TheDunmoreFuneralHome.com.
The family wishes to thank Sacred Heart Hospice for the compassion and dignity they showed to Sonny, as well as hundreds throughout the community who have shared prayers, donations and well wishes over the last several months. Contributions in Sonny’s honor may be made to the Brain Tumor Network.
