Joseph King, 96, of Moosic, Pennsylvania peacefully passed away on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023 at Glenmaura Senior Living surrounded by his children. His wife was the late Elizabeth “Betty” Barone King.
Joseph was born on Aug. 15, 1927 in Dunmore, Pa. to the late Fred and Hannah Whalen King. He was one of seven children and was educated in the Dunmore Catholic schools. Joe served in the Army during World War II. In 1967, he married the love of his life, Betty Barone. They moved to Morris Plains, N.J. and raised their three children there. Joe was employed by the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier in Morris Plains for twenty-five years before his retirement. At that time, they moved back to their hometown of Dunmore. After Betty’s untimely death at the age of 60, Joe moved to South Scranton.
In 2014, Joe would begin what would be a nine-year battle with dementia. He would live at Elan Gardens, Oakwood Terrace and most recently Glenmaura Senior Living. Joe’s family would like to thank all of the staff at these facilities who have cared for and loved him through this battle. This past week the outpouring of love that Joe and his children received as the aides and nurses at Glenmaura came in (many on their days off) to say their good byes and share their support and stories was testament to the kind of wonderful man that Joe was. We will be forever grateful to them. We would, also, like to thank Joe’s long-time physician, Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak and Residential Hospice for their exceptional care.
Joe was the quintessential gentleman. He appreciated the simple things in life. He loved to spend time outdoors sitting in the sun, take long walks, play golf, read the newspaper cover to cover, do the daily crossword puzzle and fix things. Joe was a religious man. He loved God and went to church each and every Sunday until his illness made that no longer possible. Most especially, Joe was a family man. His children and grandchildren were the center of his world. They could always count on Joe for advice, support, and love.
Joe is survived by his children, Kathleen Tatulli and husband Vito of Moosic, Rose Nealon and husband Joseph of Duryea, and Thomas King and wife Natalie of Dunmore. He is, also, survived by his grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Tatulli, Conor, Katie and Sara Nealon, and Layla and Elle King; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins; and his sisters-in-law, Ruth and Audrey Barone.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Robert, Paul, Willard and John King, Claire Miles, and Eileen McLean and their spouses.
