Kathy A. Summerhill, 72, Newton Twp., passed away peacefully Friday in the Green Ridge Care Center in Scranton after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry C. Summerhill, in 1995.

Born and raised in the Keyser Valley section of Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Donald G. Sr. and Margaret Black Smith.  She was a proud graduate of West Scranton High School Class of 1970 and had been a member of Our Lady of Snows Parish in Clarks Summit.

Kathy had a contagious smile and kind, giving spirit that would light up any room.  She loved being with her family and friends.  She looked forward to trips to Wildwood Crest, NJ and road trips in the fall to South Bend, IN to cheer on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.   She enjoyed crocheting, playing guitar, and listening to music, especially Billy Joel and the Beatles. She loved animals and adored her English Springer Spaniels Daisy Mae and Baylee.

Surviving is her daughter and caretaker, Melissa Summerhill, Newton Twp.; her longtime companion of over 20 years, Bill Foley, South Scranton; brother-in-law David Evans, Newton Twp.; sisters-in-law Shirley Summerhill, Florida and Paulette Smith, Scranton; numerous nieces and nephews whom she cherished, and many cousins within the Summerhill, Smith, and Vancheri families.

She was also preceded in death by her brother Donald Smith, Jr.; nephew Ryan Smith; brothers-in-law William Summerhill and Gerard McAndrew; and sister-in-law Margaret Evans.

The family would like to extend deepest thanks to Dr. Amber Sobuto & Gabrielle; Dr. Jeffrey Montgomery; Dr. Jason Castellanos and Max Lefton PA-C of Fox Chase Cancer Center; and Kristin and Kevin of Powerback Rehabilitation for their outstanding and compassionate care during her illness.

The funeral will be Wednesday with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Benedict, Newton Ransom Blvd., Clarks Summit.  Interment to follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
