Leon Francis Vieira Jr., 72, of Scranton, formerly of Clarks Summit, passed away Wednesday morning at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center. He was surrounded by family and received a moving send-off from VA Staff and fellow Veterans saluting him as he passed through the halls.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Leon Sr. and Joann Vieira. He attended Abington Heights School and later received his GED from Carolina Coastal Community College. Prior to retirement, he was a self-employed general contractor.
Leon was a “jack of all trades,” working in many industries, such as a truck driver, security guard, maintenance tech, remodeling & restoration, property owner & landlord. He was a U.S. Marine serving during the Vietnam War. Leon was also a talented artist who won many awards and recognitions. He enjoyed canoeing and piloting small aircraft, and he loved listening to classical, jazz & Big Band Era Music, live theater and opera. In his later years, Leon lost his sight but gained a “gift of gab.” As his world became dark, he relied on his life experiences and would talk for hours telling stories of all his travels and accomplishments. His greatest loves were his faith, family, friends and country.
Surviving are his sisters, Mary Vieira, Ann Marie Wilkes (Tony), Christina Stahovich (Greg), Donna Hellies, Teresa Mabe, and Joann Baker and companion, Lloyd. Brothers, Anthony Vieira (Elizabeth), Joseph Vieira (Tina), Michael, Daniel and David Vieira. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frankie Vieira. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
We would like to thank all the caregivers Leon had in these past few years, especially Bill and Kelly.
The funeral will be Thursday from St. Gregory’s Church, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Summit, PA 18411, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 9-10:15 a.m. at the church the morning of the Mass.
Interment, Cathedral Cemetery in West Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family to assist with funeral costs or donated to one of his many charities. Donations to: Ann Marie Wilkes, 415 Chestnut St., Peckville, PA 18452.
