Leona Fidiam Obituary

On Saturday, January 23, 2021, Leona Williams Fidiam of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away at the age of 88.

Leona Williams Fidiam was born on September 20, 1932 to Clarence Thomas Williams and Catherine Elko Williams.  She was salutatorian of her class at Dupont High School and graduated from the Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing. Leona was Head Nurse at Hahnemann Hospital in Scranton, where she met the love of her life, Thomas J. Fidiam, Sr.  Tom broke his arm swimming and was admitted to Hahnemann Hospital under Leona’s care. They fell in love at first sight, and Tom referred to this moment as the “luckiest break” of his life. They were happily married for 55 years when Tom passed away in 2012.

Leona loved to travel with Tom to see her relatives in Canada or to visit the shore with her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Leona visited the homebound, was a founding member of the MAC social club, and volunteered in the St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School cafeteria. She was a very holy woman who loved the Lord with all of her heart.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Catherine, her husband, Tom, and her sisters Constance Lashevicki and Margaret Wilford.

Leona is survived by her three children, Thomas Fidiam, Minneapolis; Cathy Fidiam Chiumento, Yatesville; and Susan Fidiam, who lived with Leona and helped care for her. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, Katie Fidiam, Dunmore; Anna Chiumento, Yatesville; and Maura Chiumento Chabala of Albrightsville; and her two sisters, Doris Goula, Dupont; and Jo Ann Long, Duryea.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. All those attending the Mass are kindly asked to follow current safety guidelines by observing physical distancing and wearing a mask.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no visitation hours and interment at the Dunmore Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Friends of the Poor in Leona’s name to 148 Meridian Ave. Scranton, Pa 18504.
