Louis Kahanowitz Obituary

Louis A. Kahanowitz, 78, of Scranton, died Sunday night at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He and his wife, the former Diane L. Widzbell, would have celebrated 30 years of marriage today.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Philmore and Celia Waltzer Kahanowitz, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and the University of Scranton. Before his retirement from the business, he was the owner of Crystal Soda Water Co. in Scranton.

Louis was active in numerous organizations. He was a former president of the Pennsylvania Soft Drink Association, a former treasurer for the Carbonated Beverage Institute, a former president of the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, and currently a member of the board of directors and executive committee; president of the Foundation for the Jewish Elderly, member of the board of Elan Gardens; former treasurer and board member of the Jewish Family Service of NEPA, was a member of Temple Israel of Scranton and its choir, was an Eagle Scout with Troop 65, was a member of Temple Israel, Dunmore; a member of Amos Lodge 136 of B'nai B'rith, former captain and solicitor for the United Jewish Appeal, and had been a very generous supporter of many other Jewish organizations in the community, including the Jewish Community Center of Scranton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Amy Solensky and husband, J.P., of Throop; Jodi Whitney and husband, Aaron, of South Abington Twp.; Rebecca Goode and Johnny Goode, of Denver, Colo.; and Kelly Singleman and husband, Jason, of South Abington Twp.; sons, Corey Kahanowitz and wife, Megan, of Phoenixville, Pa.; and Billy Schreiber, of Scranton; his sisters, Faye Bishop and husband, attorney Richard, of Scranton; and Debby Weinstein and husband, Ralph, of Fairfax, Va.; he was also a wonderful "Papa" and "Grandpa" to his nine grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Sadie, Natalie, Parker, Johnny, Lilly, LillyAnn, Teigen, Hudson and Maycee; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to a graveside burial service to be held Thursday October 22nd at 12:45 p.m. in the Dunmore Cemetery, 400 Church St., Dunmore, by Rabbi Daniel Swartz.

Also, a private funeral service will be live streamed Thursday October 22nd at noon and may be viewed on the funeral home’s Facebook page. 

Due to the current circumstance of which we are all living in, the family will not be holding a Shiva. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, 1101 Vine St., Scranton, PA 18510; Temple Israel of Scranton, 918 E. Gibson St., Scranton, PA 18510; or the Scranton Jewish Community Center, 601 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, PA 18510.
