Margaret Bistran, 96, a lifelong resident of Dunmore, died Saturday afternoon in Linwood Nursing and Rehab in Scranton. She was the wife of the late Andrew Bistran who died in 2011.
Born in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Juba Fetsko and was a graduate of Dunmore High School Class of 1946. Margaret was a lifelong parishioner of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church and it’s Altar and Rosary Society as well as it’s Ladies Guild. She was very active in the Dunmore community as she was past president of the VFW Post 3474 Ladies Auxiliary in Dunmore and was well known for her catering business with her lifelong friend Jeanie which specialized in Slovak cuisine especially Halupki. Margaret was also known as an excellent seamstress in her neighborhood, creating and altering various garments, uniforms, and wedding dresses for countless individuals.
Baba’s door was always open to her family and friends where it can be counted on to be offered homemade bread, a drink, and good conversation.
Surviving is a daughter Margie Bistran, Scranton, three sons, Joseph Bistran, Dickson City, David Bistran and his wife Michelle, Dunmore, and Robert Bistran Sr. and his wife Lori, Dunmore, a daughter in law Michelle Bistran, Mount Cobb, a sister, Betty Salva and two brothers William and Joseph Fetsko and his wife Annmarie, all of Dunmore, twelve grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son Andrew “AJ” Bistran, a brother John Fetsko, two sisters Anna Wright and Helen Sofchak Bereznak and an infant sister Mary.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore with Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy at 10AM in St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunmore. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
Friends and family may call Wednesday in the funeral home from 5-7PM.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunmore or to St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton.
