Marie Angela (Provini) Stelmak

Marie Angela Stelmak, 85, of Scranton, died early Sunday morning at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit with her loving daughters beside her. She was the wife of the late Nicholas Stelmak, who died in 2018.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Elizabeth Shahum Provini. Marie attended Scranton public schools and Lackawanna Beauty School and was a member of St. Lucy's Church in West Scranton.

As a child Marie loved to roller skate, swim, sing and dance. Marie, a beautician by trade, balanced work and motherhood perfectly. She doted on her family and was happiest when her children and grandchildren surrounded her. Marie was always hosting large Sunday dinners where her family and friends feasted on Italian food and Chianti. Marie was a woman of great faith and prayed the rosary every day. She was an avid Yankees fan and had a sweet tooth. Her beauty shop on Washburn Street was home to many friends who had their hair done there. Lots of laughs and great memories were had by all. Marie befriended everyone who encountered her and will be remembered most for her loving, kind heart and generous soul. There will never be another as sweet, caring and courageous. Having Marie for a mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend was truly a gift.

Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Amicone and husband, Joe, West Chester, Pa.; Diane Bernardi and husband, Nick, Old Forge; and Maria Svetovich and husband, George, Scranton; eight grandchildren, Chris, Andrew, Joseph and Nicole Amicone, Michael Bernardi, and Mia, Alyvia and George Svetovich; a sister, Arlene Richter, Sturges; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Nicholas "Nicky" Stelmak, who died in 2015; and a sister, Peggy Minello.

Her family wishes to thank Dr. James Sheerer whom Marie was very fond of as well as the incredible staff at Sacred Heart Hospice for the love and compassion shown to Marie. They treated her with such grace and love.

The funeral will be Thursday with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, West Scranton. Due to our current pandemic, all those attending are kindly and respectfully asked to socially distance without direct contact while giving condolences, and are required to wear a mask immediately upon entering the church. Interment will take place in Cathedral Cemetery.
