Mary Eagen McDonald, beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend to many, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2025. Born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, Mary was the second of four children to Joseph A. Eagen, Sr. and Nan Shovlin Eagen.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Herbert M. McDonald; her parents; her brothers Donald J. Eagen, Joseph A. Eagen, Jr., and James L. Eagen; and her nephew Joseph A. Eagen, III. She is survived by her sister-in-law Marguerite K. Eagen of Kingston, and her nieces and nephews: Thomas (Megan) Eagen of Kingston, Katherine (William) Thornton of Wyomissing, John (Maureen) Eagen of Philadelphia, and Robert (Jennifer) Eagen of Los Angeles, California, along with several great-nieces, great-nephews and nieces and nephews by marriage.
A graduate of Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School and Manhattanville College, Mary was a dedicated and accomplished community leader whose service touched countless lives. She served as a trustee of The University of Scranton, Manhattanville College, and Wyoming Seminary, and was a life member of the board and past president of the Family Service of Lackawanna County. Her commitment to education and community welfare extended through her work with the Friends of Weinberg Memorial Library.
Mary was a member and past president of the Lackawanna County Medical Auxiliary and served on the board of Meals on Wheels. Her passion for the arts was evident in her role as vice president of the Broadway Theatre League of Northeastern Pennsylvania. She also brought her leadership expertise to the business community as a director of the Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank and the Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bancorp, Inc. for over 20 years.
The family wishes to thank the devoted staff at Clark Summit Senior Living, Allied Skilled Nursing, Allied Hospice, Visiting Angels, and the personal caregivers who provided loving care and support, especially Helen, Natalie, and Sonja.
The funeral will be Friday, December 5, 2025 from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 East Drinker Street, Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. to be celebrated in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street, Dunmore.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
Interment will follow mass in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Covington Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in honor of Mrs. McDonald to the University of Scranton, Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School, Kingston, PA, or to the donor’s favorite charity.
