It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jo Wynne. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on April 21, 2024 after a lengthy illness.
Born on June 3, 1948, she was the oldest of three daughters of the late Frances VanBergen and Paul F. Wynne.
Raised in Dunmore, she was a 1966 graduate of Dunmore High School. In 1967, she embarked on a 32-year career at Bell Telephone and later Verizon. Over that period of time, she was manager of Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton Operator Services offices. Mary Jo cherished her friendships made during her career there. After retirement, she also worked part time at Price Chopper, Dunmore and Walmart in Taylor. She also volunteered with various groups including the Telephone Pioneers of America, Soroptimist International and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
She was a member of Saint Mary’s of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore.
Mary Jo enjoyed many vacations with friends and family. She generously treated her nieces and nephews to yearly beach vacations to Ocean City and Stone Harbor, New Jersey as well as trips to Disneyworld and many weekend getaways. Several weekends were spent with her nieces and nephews renting movies, going to amusement parks, and doing volunteer work, all the while treating them as her own. She also loved to garden and read. She enjoyed animals, especially her faithful bulldog, Rasta.
Mary Jo left an indelible mark on the lives of her grandnephews, Connor and Cory, who will forever cherish having her as a second mother. Her selfless act of love and dedication to them and all of her family is a testament to the kind of person she was - putting the needs of others before her own.
In her own words, “I have had a great life; I’ve been loved and so have loved in return. I am so proud of my family. I hope you will always remember you were all loved specially.”
Surviving are her sisters Charlotte Summa, her caregiver, and Cynthia Kelly as well nieces and nephews, Lauren Summa, Katie Loughney and husband Matt, Mark Summa, Christopher Summa and wife Stacey, and Joanna Summa. Great nieces and nephews include Connor Holt, Cory Domiano, Wynne Loughney and Layla Perotta.
Extended family includes her cousins, Bucky Mansuy and wife Joan, Christopher Mansuy and wife Merrily and their families.
She was preceded in death by her aunts Gretchen, Emmy Lou, Charlotte and Marie as well as her brothers-in-law, Jerome Kelly and Leonard Summa.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gerard Nealon, his wife Jill, and office receptionist, Linda. They are thankful for the care provided by The Hospice of the Sacred Heart as well as her niece, Joanna, for her additional support and care at home.
True to Mary Jo’s giving nature, she has donated her body to medical science in the hopes of helping others.
Donations can be made in her memory to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Rd., South Abington Twp., Pa 18411 or Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 E.D. Preate Dr. Moosic, Pa 18507
