Maxine Ann Thiel, 90, of Scranton, passed away Thursday afternoon at Geisinger-Wyoming Valley Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. She was the widow of the late Arthur Thiel who passed away in February of 1997. The couple had been married for 31 years.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Maximo and Edith (Kreinberg) Gandara. Maxine was a graduate of Scranton Central High School. She retired from Allied Services after 16 years in 1998, quickly taking on an active role as grandmother.
Maxine was a proud and active supporter of the Freeland VFW 5010 Auxiliary; she volunteered at the VA Hospital and many other organizations throughout her lifetime, including supporting her daughter and grandchildren in scouting. She enjoyed traveling, watching Wheel of Fortune and playing BINGO. She was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Maxine recently celebrated her 90th birthday and loved being the “belle of the ball” for the day, celebrating with her family and longtime friends. She was especially excited to share her day with her cousins.
Surviving is her daughter, Laura Dillon and husband Matt, Scranton. Grandchildren, Shane Thiel, Scranton; Michael Szmurlo, United States Air Force; Joseph Dillon, Wilkes Barre; and Melissa Szmurlo; Harrisburg. Great grandchildren, Autumn Thiel and Blayke Schultz-Thiel. Daughters-in-heart Brenda Davis, Alice Jewell and Joanne Kuhn. Nieces, nephews and cousins.
