Maxine Snedeker Waks, 81, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on November 07, 1942, in Scranton to the late Frederick and Romaine Rock Snedeker, she graduated from Dickson City High School class of 1960. She worked for many years in fashion retail stores in downtown Scranton such as Ruth Ziman’s, Salben's, and Joseph the Furrier.
Maxine was known for her refined elegance and her ability to make everything she touched beautiful. An epicurean homemaker, she had a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures—cooking and sharing meals with her family and friends were among the greatest joys of her life. Maxine loved to laugh and did so often. She cherished each of her five children, and nothing made her happier than leaving lipstick stains on the cheeks of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Throughout life's joys and sorrows, Maxine's faith in Jesus provided her with profound peace and enduring hope.
Maxine is survived by her children: Colleen Austin of Eynon, PA; Kim Dench and her husband, Dennis, of Leesburg, VA; Lorraine Austin of Taylor, PA; John Austin of Scranton, PA; and Shannon Austin of Andreas, PA; as well as 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, a sister, Lorraine Steel, Dallas, a brother, Glenn Snedeker of Nicholson, her companion Jack Gilbert of Greencastle, PA, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard Waks; her sister, Patricia O’Malley; and her brother, Marvin Snedeker.
A memorial service will be held on October 19, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Father's House, 1820 Church Ave. Scranton, officiated by Rev. Bob Walls with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. up until the time of the service. All who knew Maxine are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassionate care and support of their mother.
We also would like to thank the special nurses and staff at Elan Skilled Nursing Facility who cared for our mom like she was their own. You will not be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Samaritan's Purse to help with relief efforts due to the horrible devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
