Michael Ira Gersten, 78, of Scranton and formerly of Long Island, New York passed away October 3rd, 2023 at home. He was surrounded by the love of his wife Merridy, (formerly Merridy Zerfuss) and his loving family.
Born in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Irving and Susan Gersten. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and later CUNY, where he completed his master’s degree in education with a principal’s certification. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a teacher and also served as a union representative.
Mikey, as he was affectionately known, was also a loving father and grandfather. He was generous to a fault, and would never hesitate to help anyone in need. His kindness was evident to anyone who was lucky enough to have known him. He always knew when you needed a hug which made everything better.
He was a calming influence for his family and would bring sarcastic levity to any and all situations. Not only did we enjoy his humor, we also enjoyed his delicious chef inspired home cooked meals. He was a sports fan, especially, and often regrettably, of the New York Giants, who still managed to disappoint him one last time. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Lara Goldbaum and husband Jerry, Jonathan Moldawsky, Heather Peña and husband Felix, daughter-in-law Novita (Novi) Moldawsky; grandchildren Ashlyn Peña, Lenox Peña, and Alana Moldawsky, and beloved grand kitties Roxie and Benny Goldbaum.
A graveside service will be held Friday, October 6, at noon at the Dalton Jewish Cemetery, 105 Shoemaker Road, Dalton, PA officiated by Rabbi Daniel Swartz.
Family and friends will be received at the home of his wife on Friday from 5-8 p.m., Saturday from 2-8 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
