Miriam "Mim" Joseph Obituary

Miriam “Mim” Joseph, 95, Scranton, died Friday.

Born June 8, 1929 to the late Sol and the late Sylvia Atlmayer Brook in Wilkes Barre, PA

Miriam graduated Wyoming Seminary in 1947, Penn State in 1951 and Marywood University in

1972. Mim was a member in perpetuity of Temple Israel and a lifetime member of Hadassah, a

member of Brandeis Women’s Club, the American Library Associate and the past President of

Northeast chapter of the Pennsylvania Library Association. She is included in the 1992-1993

volume of Who’s Who is American Education. She was also a member of the Jewish Community

Center and Jewish Family Services.

In 1972 she joined the North Pocono School District as Middle School Librarian at the former

Arthur T Howells Middle School for 21 years. She also taught 5th grade library skills in the

Gifted program. The Origami Club was he specialty.

Upon retirement, she read to 8 preschool programs. Three, in the United Neighborhood Centers,

the Children’s Cornerstone Learning Center and 4 Headstart programs. For her dedication

to the United Neighborhood Centers she received a plaque. The Kids called her “The

Book Lady”.

Miriam had 2 adult book clubs, one at the Scranton Club and one at the Scranton Children’s

Library.

Miriam and 3 friends read to a blind student from day 1 to their graduation.

She was a Den Mother at the JCC Girl Scout Troop and Co-leader of Temple Israel Intermediate

Girl Scout Troop.

With her husband Joel, she worked diligently for Voter Registration as a member of the local

NAACP.

She is pre-deceased by her husband Joel Joseph, her parents Sol and Sylvia Brook, her inlaws

Phil and Hannah Joseph, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Harold and Frankie Joseph,

as well as Sam and Jayne Green and her sister and brother-in-law Joe and Joanne Ehrlich.

She is survived by her son Stephen and husband Shameer Khan, her daughter Cathy and husband

Solatha Simms and her daughter Patricia Cirotti. Her granddaughter Jemimah Walther

and her husband James, Leah and husband Joseph Losavich … grandsons Micah and wife

Jackie Simms, Philip and Drew Cirotti, and 2 great-grandchildren, Norah and Bennett Simms.

For 10 years, she traveled with Hadassah’s Check It Out team as a 2-time breast cancer survivor

Swimming, reading, Bridge, Crossword Puzzles and Scrabble was her relaxation.

With special thanks to the entire team at St. Mary’s Villa.
