Patricia Sperling, DVM Obituary

Dr. Patricia Ann Sperling sadly passed away on October 27, 2025, after courageously fighting pancreatic cancer.

Patricia was born in Portland, Oregon on September 4, 1959. She is the daughter of the Janet McCauley and the late Ronald Maciosek, Sr.

At the age of 4 years old, her family moved to Cable, Wisconsin where she spent her entire childhood. Patricia graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin, Superior.  She then pursued her childhood dream of achieving her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. After earning her DVM, she moved to Scranton and started her career spending 12 years at a local practice before opening her own hospital.

With her husband David Wagner, Patricia started the first AAHA-American Animal Hospital Association accredited practice in the area, Dr. PAWS Hospital for Companion Animals. Her lifelong dream was to provide a modern facility with an exceptional staff offering the best of care. “Dr. PAWS”, as she became affectionately known fulfilled her dream 10-fold.

During the time she spent on this earth, Patty lived her best life. Fulfilled as a veterinarian serving her clients for 38 years, she recently received 40-year recognition as a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, AVMA.

Patty had many hobbies and joys in life. She enjoyed frequent trips back to Cable, Wisconsin to spend time with her family. Patty could often be found at local thrift shops, estate sales, and yard sales. She enjoyed frequenting the casino and when the weather was right, she would be outside tending to her garden. She loved landscaping her property and took great pride in having designed and constructed two koi ponds. Home life was filled with hanging out with her kitties, watching Hallmark movies, doing 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles, thinking of and pursuing inventions, all while multi-tasking as a creative chef, notoriously making enough food to last a winter, in addition to sharing with staff and friends.

Patricia leaves behind her loving husband David Wagner, in addition to her mother Janet McCauley, eight siblings; Loretta, Doreen, Ronald, Dave, Steve, Juli, Mike, and Philip as well as many nieces and nephews, her best friend Lynn Pearl, and her amazing family at Dr. PAWS Animal Hospital.

The funeral will be held Friday, November 14th at 10am at St. Ann Maronite Church, 1320 Price St, Scranton. Friends may call on Thursday, November 13th at Savino Traditional Funerals & Cremation Care, Carl J. Savino, Supervisor, 157 S. Main Street, West Scranton from 4-7pm.

Dr. Sperling had an extreme fondness for NEPA Pet Fund Rescue. The family asks that any donations be made to this organization or to your favorite animal rescue. Donations may also be made to St. Ann Maronite Church.
