Paul L. Simonetti, 73, of Dunmore, passed away Monday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Eugene and Elvera “Lol” Versarge Simonetti and was a graduate of West Scranton High School. Prior to retirement, he was a manager at Perkins Restaurant.
Paul lived a full life; in high school he was a talented football player and was on the West Scranton team that beat the Blakely Dynasty ending their 49-game win streak. He was also a pro-boxer ranking as high as 19th in the world, and on March 8, 1971 doing what Mohammed Ali couldn’t, he won at Madison Square Garden. Besides his athletics, he was a sports fan who wouldn’t miss a Yankees, University of Pittsburgh, or any college football game. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving are sons, Paul Simonetti and wife, Kelly, Maryland; and Justin Simonetti and wife, Jenn, Olyphant. Most important to him were his grandchildren, Christian, Ashlyn, Alex, Abby and Willow. Brother, Leo Simonetti and wife, Betty, Olyphant; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gina Simonetti.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore. Inurnment is private at the convenience of the family in St. John’s Cemetery, Jessup.
Friends may pay their respects from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday.
