Phyllis Brandes, 77, of Clarks Summit, died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She is survived by her husband, Ed Brandes.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Sidney and Ann Shaffer Brick, she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School class of 1961 and went on to attend Penn State University. Phyllis was an active member of many community organizations and gave her time and energy toward assisting others. She was especially active at Temple Israel in Scranton, where she was known for her steady and inclusive leadership. Over the past five decades, Phyllis served as Temple president, a board member, and president of its sisterhood.
Phyllis was an avid reader, enthusiastic baseball fan (Yankees), and a life master bridge player. She cherished her weekly bridge and mahjong games, which she shared with many, many friends through the years. She took a keen interest in the activities of her children and grandchildren and was always interested in their pursuits and accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to share her enthusiasm or support.
She is also survived by her daughter, Jodi Jaspan and her husband, David, Philadelphia; a son, Jeffrey Brandes and wife, Kara, Lexington, Mass.; grandchildren, Emily Brandes, Luke Jaspan and Jacob Brandes; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins, which include Nancy Rofey and Betta Clair.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore, by Rabbi Miriam Spitzer and Cantor Vladimir Aronzon. Due to our current pandemic, all those attending are kindly and respectfully asked to socially distance and are required to wear a mask.
