Richard A. Jones, Dunmore, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday. His wife, the former MaryEllen Bevilacqua, died on February 11, 2016.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Preston and Marjorie Lanyon Jones, he was a graduate of Abington Heights High School Class of 1965 where he lettered in both track and basketball, and went on to honorably serve in the United States Navy. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Moses Taylor Hospital for over 40 years, until needing to care for his wife. He was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore and could be found frying pizza fritta at their annual Italian Festival. Richard was very active and was a member of the Wednesday night golf league at Pine Hills Golf Course and looked forward to his monthly lunch dates with his sister-in-law Frani.
He was an avid sports fan, especially of Dunmore athletics, Penn State, and the Seattle Seahawks, but his favorite was watching his grandsons’ sporting events over the years. Whether they were playing or coaching the teams, he was always their biggest supporter. He cherished all times spent with family and particularly loved spending holidays and sitting by the pool with his extended Murray family.
Surviving is his daughter, Lori Murray and husband Chris, and his grandsons Christopher John Murray, Jr. and Colby Richard Murray, all of Dunmore; his sister Sally Robertson and husband Rob of Scranton; sister-in-law Frani Jones of Clarks Summit; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, David William Jones, and a niece, Kimberly Fraley.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore.
Interment to follow in Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst Township.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5-7 p.m.
